Lucie Safarova did the unthinkable

Western & Southern Open, Cincinnati

[CR17] Lucie Safarova (CZE) won her first match against [CR20] Venus Williams (USA), 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. Venus struggled the entire match and although she had opportunities to win the match in the second set, she just could not capitalize on them.  The improved resilience and play of Safarova prevented Venus from taking a 5th straight win against the Czech.

Maybe, just maybe, this is a result of the toll taken by the four matches that went the distance last week at the Rogers Cup, Canada. Whatever the reason, Safarova got the win and she deserves to be congratulated because she battled not only a determined opponent, but also her nerves. Safarova always appears to be in a state of panic when she steps to the service line; however, today she maintained her focus and did not get distracted by thoughts of never having beaten Venus before.
