Missed opportunities

US OPEN

That is why the lower ranked players lose. They do not seize the moment when they have a higher ranked player on the ropes.  [CR90] Misaki Doi (JPN) should be in her hotel room with a victory, instead she left the court with a loss.

[CR17] Victoria Azarenka (BLR) has been battling lower extremity injuries and is lacking in confidence; thus, it was an opportunity for Doi to get the upset.  If you do not take the chance to win when you have it, it becomes harder to do so the longer the match progresses because the higher ranked players will inevitably find a way to win.  Doi allowed Azarenka to hang around long enough to find enough of her form to do just that.

Azarenka was not interested in an early loss at the last Major and despite her less than stellar play, she would squeak out the win 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.
