First encounter

Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, China

[CR7] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) could not play her game against [CR9] Eugenie Bouchard (CAN).

Wozniacki hugs the baseline and plays more offensive and attacking tennis when she feels confident.  It was apparent  early in the match that something was off.  She would take a medical time-out in the second set to address the issue.  Although she came back on court with her right thigh heavily bandaged, she was never going to be a threat to Bouchard.  Her confidence comes from her foot speed and her fitness; impair the physical aspect of her game and the mental aspect will falter as well.  Doubts crept in and she lost the match.

Bouchard has an attacking and aggressive style of play and when she is feeling confident she goes for her shots by hitting the ball harder and coming to net. Wozniacki, fighter that she is, was no match for the depth and pace of Bouchard’s shots.  Although she fought, the score does not reflect her effort and she lost easily, 2-6, 3-6.

The importance of being mentally and physically fit in tennis was once again on display.
