Miami Open presented by Itau
[CR129] Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. [CR120] Thiemo de Bakker (NED)
Zverev is beginning to show signs of the maturation that comes with time and experience on the tour. In his first round of qualifying, he defeated [CR70] Joao Souza (BRA) 6-3, 7-5. Yesterday, he defeated Thiemo de Bakker, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3. Tomorrow, he’s into the main draw and his first round opponent will be the big serving Australian, [CR69] Sam Groth. There is no easy round at an ATP Masters 1000 event and Zverev is about to find that out. Is he up to the challenge?
What Zverev lacks in experience he can make up with youthful enthusiasm; however, he has to maintain his focus. He has shown signs of letting his emotions get the better of him, but he is still young. He also needs to avoid looking ahead as that can be distracting for a young player; yet, it is understandable, when you see his excitement. Zverev can draw on his experience of making it to the semifinals last year of an ATP Tour 500 tournament and hold on to his belief that he belongs. Whatever the outcome, it should be an interesting debut for the young German. Of course, I am strongly rooting for our spotlight player.
