[CR41] Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) vs. [CR123] Alexander Zverev (GER)
It was the second consecutive defeat for Bellucci at the hands of Zverev. It was almost an identical replica of their first encounter earlier this year. Bellucci won the first set only to subsequently lose the second and third sets, to lose the match, 7-6(7), 3-6, 4-6. Once again he was frustrated by the persistent quality play of Zverev, who did not get discouraged despite the loss of the first set. Bellucci was left wondering what went wrong and this time he came close to losing the third set with a bagel.
Zverev showed his maturity in this match. He lost the momentum in the first after taking the early break. Yet, despite the setback, he persevered and kept applying the pressure to the veteran clay court player, Bellucci. Zverev won this encounter 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Well done from the teenager, who gets to his second ATP World Tour semifinals of his young career. It’s the second of many to come if he continues to play with such focus and determination. Why not? Zverev has the talent and the support of a strong team. Can he win his first ATP title at this tournament? First he will have to get by either Tommy Robredo or Paul Henri-Mathieu in the semifinals.
