[CR8] Marin Cilic (CRO) vs. [CR96] Alexander Zverev (GER)
Although he came up short, it was a valiant effort from Zverev. He pushed the eighth ranked player all the way. A few costly errors at the end of both sets did him in. He will be disappointed; however, for his second top ten encounter, he held his own very nicely. He is much improved from his first top ten encounter, when he was blitzed by David Ferrer last year in Hamburg. I am still convinced that fatigue played a major role in his lopsided defeat in that match. Fatigue was also a contributing factor today as well, but this time the score backs up the evidence of his growing maturity and increased fitness.
Winning the first set was crucial for Zverev. It was too much of an emotional, not to mention physical toll to have to come back a third consecutive match from such a deficit. He tried with everything he had to get that first set and he never gave up in the second, even when Cilic served for the match. I am very proud of his performance today and that is one of the reasons I am convinced that he will get into the upper echelon of tennis. Although Cilic defeated him 7-5, 7-6(3), it was not easy as Zverev made him earn the victory.
