[CR38] Borna Coric (CRO) vs. [CR85] Alexander Zverev (GER)
In the battle of teenage stars, Coric won their first skirmish 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(5). It was a two-hour plus fiercely competitive match from both players. It was a pity that someone had to lose, and unfortunately for us, it was Zverev. He fought back to even the match and determinedly held on to his serve in the decider. He was even up 3-0 in the tiebreak and had the match on his racquet. Then abruptly, it was over. Zverev lost both his serves to the relentless attack from Coric. Coric moves on to round two to face Stan Wawrinka. That should be another interesting match for the youngster. He lost their previous encounter this year in straight sets. Wawrinka may still be nursing an ailing back.
How does Zverev walk away from a match like this and not be disappointed? Zverev must realize that this is all a part of the learning process, he will lose some matches that will be heartbreakers. Even the greats have had matches on their racquets and lost them. You stay positive because you know that you gave a hundred percent and you maintain your confidence because you almost had the victory. I am not worried, Zverev will bounce back from this quickly, he’s a fighter and he knows where he wants to go. In the grand scheme of things, this was just a minor hiccup. He will make the adjustments to his game and continue to improve with each match that he plays. We will continue to keep an eye on him as the season progresses.
