ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament
[CR15] Gilles Simon (FRA) vs. [CR70] Alexander Zverev (GER)
Zverev has game and today he showed his moxie. He started off very strong and had the early break in the second set. It almost looked like his match against Pospisil, tough first set followed by an easy second set for the straight sets victory. However, Simon is a crafty player and he was not about to concede defeat easily. He immediately broke back and that rattled Zverev. Although he held his next serve, he got broken a second time to lose the second set. The momentum shifted to Simon who took the early break in the third. Zverev was almost ready to collapse from fatigue and cramps, yet managed to find the will to break back immediately.
Zverev stayed calm despite his physical distress, dug deep and forced a tiebreak for the match. It was inconceivable, almost impossible that Zverev could win this match in his state. However, he never gave up; he showed us his steely determination and surprised Simon with some brilliant tennis to upset the third seed 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(4). It does not get any easier for Zverev, who faces Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals. They met once last year and Monfils won in straight sets. Zverev knows that he will have to be sharp from the start and may have hurt his chances with this physically demanding/emotionally draining match against Simon; however, he has the advantage of being a teenager on his side and should be ready for the Monfils challenge tomorrow.
