Men’s Semi-final: Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Alexander Zverev (GER)
Federer, eighth time Gerry Weber Open Champion, was dethroned today by our spotlight player, Zverev. His talent was noted when I saw him play for the first time in 2014 and I have watched him steadily improve since then. Why did I pick Zverev out of all the other young and upcoming players? He had something extra…..belief. He has grown in physical and mental strength and this is reflected in his confident attitude on court. He will continue to develop his game and get even stronger, which will make him even more dangerous. He is already quite comfortable playing the top guys because he has quickly proven that he can hang with them. He pushed Rafael Nadal earlier this year at Indian Wells and I knew it was inevitable that he would have a big win.
Was this a shocking result for me, absolutely not! Federer may not be a hundred percent; however, grass is his surface and he has always been able to find ways to win even when he is not at his best. I will not take anything away from Zverev who competed well the entire match and won this encounter playing absolutely brilliant tennis against one of the greatest grass court players ever. Zverev won 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3 and will face another German, Florian Mayer in the final. Will Zverev claim his first title at home or will the resurgent Mayer ruin his coming out party? Zverev has already had to defeat one German in the first round. Zverev has shown that he learns from his mistakes and this time around I think he will be hoisting the trophy.
