Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. John Isner (USA)
The teenager led their head-to-head going into this match. In their only previous encounter last year, Zverev won easily in two sets; however, today’s match would be an entirely different story. Isner has been looking to rediscover his top form, while Zverev has been brimming with confidence. He’s the youngest player in the top 20 and at this age, he already has two singles titles to his name. Despite the significant difference in experience, Zverev has already proven that he is a force to be reckoned with. He beat Stan Wawrinka last year to claim his first title. Last month he claimed his second singles title by defeating Richard Gasquet. He has beaten Roger Federer and came pretty close to defeating Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells last year.
Isner knew that this match would be a battle and having secured the first set, he hoped that he would cross the line victorious this time around. Unfortunately, he did not bargain for the improved mental fortitude of his young opponent. It’s so nice to play without fear and when you are young, that is the case. Zverev is not only playing fearless tennis, he is also playing very smart tennis for his age. It’s fascinating for me to watch him evolve as a player. With each match you can see how he is growing mentally and physically. He is still a teenager with so much potential ahead of him if he stays healthy and maintains his focus. He is fortunate as well to have his older brother (Mischa) on tour with him and playing doubles together can only further aid in his maturation. Zverev defeated Isner 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 7-6(5).
