Carreno Busta Makes First Major Semifinals

Pablo Carreno Busta makes first major semifinals

US OPEN

[19] Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) vs. [33] Diego Schwartzman (ARG)

It was unfortunate that Schwartzman was injured; yet, despite the injury, he gave a hundred percent. This was an opportunity to get to his first Major semifinals and he was determined to fight to the last point. He had several opportunities to perhaps change the outcome of the match; however, he could not capitalize.

Although he got a little tight, as expected given the magnitude of the occasion, Carreno Busta was better at critical moments. He was up two breaks in the first set and got a tad tentative when he served for the first set. It seemed as if the Argentine had been let off the hook; however, the Spaniard made no mistake the second time around and served it out.

With the first set in his bag, he seemed to be fully in charge, getting the early break in set two; however, once again he squandered the lead and Schwartzman would break to get back on serve. Yet, the Argentine could never get that extra break to take the lead and Carreno Busta increased his effort and broke again to secure the second set.

Schwartzman wanted to keep fighting, but now it was an uphill battle and his body was no longer responding to his commands to fight. He had three opportunities to get a break but again he could not take advantage. In contrast, the Spaniard converted sixty-seven percent of his break point opportunities and this time he made no mistake in consolidating his breaks.

Carreno Busta won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and is the first one into the semifinals. He is also the first player to play four consecutive qualifiers in a Major. Another first for him, he’s into the semifinals without dropping a set.
