Bertens and Vekic to Battle For Title

Bertens

St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, Russia

[8] Kiki Bertens (NED) vs. [10] Aryna Sabalenka (BLR)

This was the third meeting of these two top ten players and for the third consecutive time Bertens got the better of Sabalenka. It was not for lack of opportunities; Sabalenka got tight at critical points. At 5-6 down in the first set tiebreak, Sabalenka flubbed a shot after saving two set points to lose the set and never recovered her composure. Instead of being patient and waiting for the right time to execute a winner, she tried hitting winners on every shot. The result, Bertens won 7-6(5), 6-2.

This was a brilliant performance from the Croatian. Zvonareva fought valiantly despite the score but there was no getting past the determination of Vekic. Vekic save the one break point against her serve; her forehand down the line and her serve won her the match. However, her improved fitness was also on display and that kept her in the long rallies that Zvonareva made her play. Vekic won 6-2, 6-2.

Toyota Thailand Open, Hua Hin

[49] Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS) vs.  [74] Tamara Zidansek (SLO)

Zidansek played a more competitive first set, in part because Tomljanovic was very nervous. However, one the Australian secure the first set, there was not stopping her. Riding her wave of confidence, she simply out hit Zidansek and forced the Slovenian to go for impossible shots. Tomljanovic won 6-4, 6-1.

As in the first semifinal match, Linette played a more completive first set; however, staying toe-to-toe with the relentless attacking game of Yastremska finally wore her down. The eighteen-year-old Ukrainian won 6-4, 6-3 and is hoping to bag her second WTA title; however, first she will have to get by the hard hitting Australian. Yastremska may be feeling quite positive though since she won their only previous encounter last year.
