Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. Dustin Brown (GER)
In their first meeting in a main draw, Brown did what he has done before to higher ranked opponents, he stunned the number one seed. Despite winning their only previous encounter in 2014, Zverev was no match today for the talented German.
BROWN HAS DONE THIS BEFORE
A confident Brown, who goes for his serve and attacks the volley is a dangerous opponent on grass. Rafael Nadal can attest to this; he has lost both matches they played and both times the matches were contested on grass. What makes Brown such a tricky opponent for these top guys? When he is on, he is unpredictable; thus, the opponent never knows when he is going to attack. He volleys well, utilizes the drop shot effectively or he simply beats you with pace. Why is the German ranked so low? Injury has played a role; however, he is often inconsistent and goes for shots that are too risky (when he makes those shots everyone is impressed; however, when he does not, they wonder why he attempted such a shot).
THE STATISTICS TOLD THE STORY
Brown was the better server in the first set, protecting his first serve well and winning more than sixty percent of his second serve. He fought off the only break point against his serve and broke Zverev once to secure the first set. He probably should have won the match in straight sets; he had the lead and tried to be a tad too cute and lost his lead. Zverev fought back to win the tiebreak and evened the match; yet, his confidence is not quite at the level we have come to expect. With the momentum squarely on his side of the net, he could not keep the pressure on Brown.
WHAT’S GOING ON WITH ZVEREV?
Where does the lack of confidence show up for many tennis players? Usually in their serve; Zverev made fourteen double faults in the match. He is a top ten player and he won less than thirty percent of his second serves; thus, it is no surprise that he lost the match against a streaky opponent like Brown. Brown won 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3 and while it may seem stunning to many, for those of us who know how good Brown can be on grass, this was not a surprise.
