Defending champion, [5] Angelique Kerber (GER), was stunned by American [95] Lauren Davis. Davis, right shoulder and left knee heavily taped, somehow found a way to fight back and take the three-set victory, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

[9] John Isner (USA) lost in five sets to the crafty veteran, [58] Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ), 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.

[13] Marin Cilic (CRO), 2017 Wimbledon finalist, lost 4-6, 4-6, 4-6 to [69] Joao Sousa (POR).

[18] Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) lost to [61] Daniel Evans (GBR) 3-6, 2-6, 6-7(2).

[20] Gilles Simon (FRA) lost in a five-set thriller to American [94] Tennys Sandgren. Sandgren won the first two sets and then completely lost his way; yet, he managed to pull it together in the fifth set to win 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 8-6.

[25] Amanda Anisimova (USA) lost to [75] Magda Linette (POL) 4-6, 5-7.

[25] Alex de Minaur (AUS) lost to American [71] Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-7(4), 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

[7] Bob/Mike Bryan (USA) defeated Molchanov/Zelenay 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4.

[123] Taylor Townsend came close to upsetting the fourth seed; however, she took her foot off the pedal and let Kiki Bertens (NED) off the hook. Bertens fought back and won 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2.

[3] Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeated his nemesis, [43] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) in a three hour battle. Nadal dropped the second set, but fought back to win both tiebreaks 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3). It does not get any easier for the Spaniard, next he will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

[72] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (USA) moves into the third round with a 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-3 defeat of [77] Ricardas Berankis (LTU).

[135] Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) bids farewell with a second-round loss to [17] Matteo Berrettini (ITA). Berrettini won 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-3.
