Less than six months ago, at the US Open, [9] Serena Williams (USA) destroyed the twenty-eight-year old 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. What did Wang do this time around to not only avoid embarrassment, but pull off the biggest upset of the tournament?

Perhaps it was not all Wang and she got a lot of assist from Williams playing tight. In set one Williams failed to break, despite having four chances. She would lose the first set after being broken once. But that was not the entire story, Wang overall won a higher percentage of her second serve and she broke Williams in every set.

The weapon that everyone has come to expect Williams to use in her defense was not working today and now one wonders if she expended too much energy in winning the title in Auckland earlier this month. It is looking more and more like fatigue played a role in Williams demise in addition to the tenacity of Wang. Thus, Williams will have to wait to get number twenty-four, and now perhaps more than ever, it is looking like she won’t ever get there. [27] Qiang Wang (CHN) won 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5.

[9] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) lost to the resurgent Croatian, [39] Marin Cilic. In a little over four hours, Cilic won 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.

[10] Madison Keys lost 4-6, 4-6 to [22] Maria Sakkari (GRE).

Gauff Stuns Osaka

[3] Naomi Osaka (JPN), the defending champion was ousted by the fifteen-year-old, [67] Cori Gauff. Like Wang, Gauff got her revenge 6-3, 6-4 as Osaka did not bring her best form to the competition.

[18] Alison Riske had to battle back after easily dropping the first set; yet, she was up for the challenge. She stole the second set in the tiebreak and never looked back. Riske defeated [39] Julia Goerges (GER) 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.

[100] Tennys Sandgren defeated fellow American, [45] Sam Querrey, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Wozniacki Bids Adieu

[36] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) announced that she would retire after the Australian Open. Well, the lovable Dane bid adieu last night. She lost her final match played to [78] Ons Jabeur (TUN). Jabeur, playing the best Australian Open of her career, knocked out the former champion 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

After his big win against Grigor Dimitrov, American Tommy Paul had nothing left in the tank. It was easy picking for [67] Marton Fucsovics (HUN), who seems to enjoy playing in Australia. In 2018, he got to the fourth round, the furthest he has ever gone in a major, and with his 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Paul, the Hungarian is back in the fourth round and looking to go even further this year.
