Doubt Continues to Surround the US Open

Basel doubt

Will it take place or not? If yes, how surmountable are the problems facing the organization and players? How realistic are their plans?

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to continue well into this year and a few years to come.  Still, no one is sure how things will settle when all is said and done.

One thing is certain, this virus is not going away and we will have to adapt and adjust just as we have done with all the other viruses that have affected mankind over the centuries.

Djokovic & Nadal doubt whether playing the US Open is wise

Who would want to play at the US Open under all these doubts and restrictions?

Playing a competitive sport is tough enough, do you really want to add worrying about whether you will come in contact with something or someone and get the virus?

As much as we like to think that the flu virus has taken more lives, would you as a player, much less a fan, be willing to take the risk of infection by going to a sporting event, where the likelihood is increased of coming in contact with someone who has the virus?

Would you feel comfortable playing and breathing in freely around others without a mask?  Does the mask really prevent you from getting infected or is it just something we use to make us feel we are doing something to protect ourselves.

I have no idea, everything I learned in medical school and throughout my years of practice says “NO!”, but what do I know.

I know that there is still a lot of concern and FEAR.  Fear, because there are still too many unanswered questions.

Federer out for the Season

Roger Federer is out for the rest of the 2020 season (smart move); unfortunately, this was due in part to a setback in his recovery from right knee issues (second surgery) . No doubt he is bummed . We wish him a thorough and speedy recovery.

Novak Djokovic is questioning whether he wants to subject himself to the “proposed restrictions of the US Open” and is already thinking of his preparation for the 2020 French Open.

Defending champion, Rafael Nadal, appears not to want anything to do with defending his US Open title, at least not under these conditions.

Everyone has been waiting, not so patiently, to hear what decision will finally be made about the US Open. Is it a go or not? Looks like we may get closer to that answer next week- more doubt and uncertainty.
