Zverev Fights Back to Defeat Mannarino in 4

US OPEN, New York (USA)

[5] Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. [32] Adrian Mannarino (FRA)

In their two previous matches, Mannarino had never taken a set from the German. Today he changed that statistic by winning the first set in a tiebreaker; yet he could not keep the momentum going.

They were scheduled to play around 12:30 pm today; however, they did not take the court until much later in the afternoon after some question about Mannarino’s health (apparently he had been around Benoit Paire, who tested positive for the coronavirus). There were concerns about potential risk to self and others; however, after some debate he was allowed to take the court.

Zverev was not too troubled about losing the first set, perhaps confident that he had the 2:0 lead in their head-to-head, he knew he could turn things around. One break was all he needed to secure the second set and even the match.

Mannarino may rue the fact that he was unable to break the German on his only opportunity in the second set, which could have potentially given him the chance of another tiebreaker.

The hard courts are perhaps the courts that cause the most physical damage to the body; thus, it is never a surprise when a player calls for the trainer. In addition, the Frenchman has a history of injuries.

At 0-3 down in the third set, the Frenchman had a medical timeout. It was clear he was not the same player that played the first set and a half. Mannarino’s game deteriorated as his focus and mobility were compromised.

Not willing to be too sympathetic, the German kept turning the screws.  He aced his opponent and sent backhand winners down the line testing his opponent’s injury. Sadly, there was not much left in the tank as the Frenchman would surrender his serve a second time in the fourth set to lose the match.

With the 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory, Zverev heads to the fourth round for the second consecutive year at the US Open.  The young German would love to surpass last year’s results and his fans would be thrilled if he did.

FYI: Kristina Mladenovic is another player who was around Benoit Paire, and she has been forced to withdraw from the doubles and be in quarantine. Interesting to say the least, “Why was Mannarino allowed to play his match, and she wasn’t?
