Robin Montgomery & Katrina Scott, New Faces To Watch

Katrina Scott

Montgomery Has Good Work Ethics

Robin Montgomery, ranked 368, is a sixteen-year-old American with promise.  I did not catch her height from the commentators; however, she looks at least 6’0” and quite built.  She has some weight behind her shots and loves the flat ball, power is her thing.  I think once she starts to better understand court positioning and how to use that to make better shot selections, she can be a threat.  She also has to improve her serve and mobility. I hope she can take full advantage of being a leftie when she improves her serve.

Her opponent today was [50] Magda Linette (POL), who is coming back from knee surgery.  Linette was challenged by Montgomery; thus, it was not a one-sided beat down.  However, Montgomery’s lack of match play and mental strength were apparent in the third set.  She was served a bagel in the third set due to her lack of consistency and focus; Linette won 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Despite the loss, I like her game; therefore, I will be keeping an eye on her.

Katrina Scott, Does She Have What It Takes?

Katrina Scott, ranked 443, is another sixteen-year-old American.  At 5’11, Scott’s best weapon is her backhand.  Like Montgomery, she has limited experience on tour; however, Scott won her first-round match at the 2020 US Open.  In 2019, she was a Junior Fed Cup Champion.  She was up against the veteran player [66] Sorana Cirstea [ROU].  Unfortunately, for the young right-handed American player, she was outplayed from the start and never recovered. The Romanian won 6-2, 6-2.

When Will Venus Williams Retire?

After knee and ankle issues at this year’s Australian Open, many thought that would be the end for American Venus Williams.  However, that is not the case, she turned up at the Miami Open to play Zarina Diyas.  It was not a got start and with her right elbow heavily bandaged, and her movement clearly hindered, Williams probably should seriously call it quits.  We understand she loves the game, but really at forty years old and physically breaking down, “What is her objective?”  Williams is currently ranked 79 and her ranking will continue to slide because she is not going deep enough in the draw to gain much needed ranking points.  Painful to watch her, a shadow of her former talents.  It was another early round loss for Williams, 2-6, 6-7(10).
