Errani’s Ranking Takes A Dive

WEEK: 02.20.2017

Sara Errani is always a fighter and she depends on her mobility and physical fitness to win her matches.  When either is compromised she struggles, because she lacks the big weapons that most of the top players have.  She relies on her cunning and her ability to out maneuver her opponents with finesse shots to compensate for the lack of a big serve and powerful groundstrokes.  She won Dubai last year and lost ranking points because she was unable to defend her title this year due to a right adductor injury suffered during her last match in Fed Cup.  This has resulted in her ranking taking a dive to number 93.  It’s a rough start to the season for the Italian who struggled last year to string consecutive wins together and saw her ranking slowly declining. This new injury has definitely set her back; however, she is the consummate professional and will fight to get herself back in shape for the season.  We know how much she depends on her legs and wish her a speedy recovery.

ATP Tour: there is a new face in the top ten, David Goffin; he joins the club after his impressive performance the last two weeks.  He was a finalist in Sofia the previous weekend and yesterday in the Netherlands.  Unfortunately he came up short but gained valuable ranking points which allowed him to become the first Belgium male to be ranked in the top 10. He replaces Gael Monfils at #10.

WTA Tour: the top ten members remained the same and maintained their exact positions from the previous week.
