Amanda Anisimova Sets Up Intriguing Match Against Sabalenka

Amanda Anisimova

[16] Amanda Anisimova defeated [22] Clara Tauson, 7-6(4), 6-4. It is so nice to see Anisimova elevating her game on the big stage. She hung in there during the first set when it went to a tiebreaker and she fought through to win that set. She also did not get discouraged when she was broken in the second set. That is bringing your focus into the moment and staying dialed in to what you need to do to achieve your goal. Unfortunately, it does not get any easier for the American. Up next is the number one ranked and seeded player, Aryna Sabalenka.

Will Anisimova Bring It When It Counts?

Amanda Anisimova leads their H2H 5:2. There was a stretch where she led 4:0; however, the Belarusian figured out how to beat her and won the next two encounters. Yet, coming into this encounter, the American may have the psychological edge since she came back stronger at the 2024 Australian Open to defeat her in straight sets. An interesting statistic, Anisimova has won all three encounters on clay, including a Roland Garros match in 2019. This could potentially be an extremely competitive and entertaining match.

[21] Jelena Ostapenko could not find her game against [12] Elena Rybakina. Rybakina was in no mood to mess around and won 6-2, 6-2.

Other American Successes On Day Six

This is a shocker since Korda had won their last three consecutive encounters. Interestingly, Tiafoe won their only encounter on clay, so perhaps not a shocker for [15] Frances Tiafoe to defeat fellow American, [23] Sebastian Korda 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4. [12] Tommy Paul will have nothing left in the tank if he continues to go the distance in all his matches. Clay is definitely more taxing on the mind and body than any other surface. [24] Karen Khachanov also went the distance in his previous round. Paul went over four hours this time to defeat Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3.

[13] Ben Shelton got a straight sets victory over Matteo Gigante, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Remember, Gigante defeated former top ten player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the previous round. Shelton benefitted big time from his victory by walk-over, which enabled him to be well rested to face Gigante. Next up for Shelton, [2] Carlos Alcaraz. The American duo of Harrison/King defeated R. Arneodo/M. Guinard 6-4, 6-0.
