Coco Gauff was probably not expecting to lose in the first round of Wimbledon as the number two seed. Furthermore, she was probably not expecting to lose to Dayana Yastremska given their H2H. That’s where H2Hs can be deceptive. Despite leading their H2H 3:0, they have never played on any surface but clay. The trajectory and speed of the Ukrainian’s shots are neutralized on clay. In 2023 Gauff also lost in the first round of Wimbledon.
Coco Gauff Will Need To Renovate Her Serve
[2] Coco Gauff was not ready for her opponent. Gauff’s serve which continues to be her Achilles heel further compounded the issue. It is a telling sign when your serve deserts you as it is the only shot you have control of. Nine double faults and a low first service percentage provided the perfect scenario for the Ukrainian to upset Gauff 7-6(3), 6-1. The American was broken four times, and this loss may affect her ranking.

[13] Tommy Paul had to put up some game to defeat British wildcard, Johannus Monday. Paul saved all break points against serve and won 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. [5] Taylor Fritz needed over three hours and two days to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Somehow, Perricard managed to squander his 2-0 sets lead, and that is always painful. Fritz fought back to win the last three set 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-4. [10] Ben Shelton was challenged but managed to get by Alex Bolt 6-4, 7-6(1), 7-6(4). Reilly Opelka defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 7-5, 7-6(4). Marcos Giron defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli 7-6(6), 7-6(4), 6-3.

[10] Emma Navarro defeated former two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, 6-3, 6-1. [28] Sofia Kenin defeated fellow American, Taylor Townsend, 7-6(5), 6-2. Caty McNally, currently ranked outside the top two hundred, got a nice victory today. McNally defeated Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-1. Danielle Collins is still playing tennis, and she defeated Camila Osorio 6-3, 6-2. Katie Volynets defeated a dangerous player, Tatjana Maria. Maria won the first set, 6-3 but could not win the tiebreaker. Volynets won the last two sets 7-6(4), 6-1 to win the match. Caroline Dolehide defeated Arantxa Rus 6-2, 6-2. Hailey Baptiste defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-7(0), 6-1, 6-2.
Women Seeds Who Bid Adieu On Day Two
American [3] Jessica Pegula was stunned by Elisabetta Cocciaretto. I am not surprised though; we have seen it repeatedly. When you play a tournament immediately before a major and you go deep, it often backfires. Pegula came in flat, and it showed. Cocciaretto won 6-2, 6-3. [5] Qinwen Zheng was unprepared for Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. [15] Karolina Muchova ran into a determined Xinyu Wang. Wang won 7-5, 6-2. [26] Marta Kostyuk was also upset in her match by Veronika Erjavec. Erjavec figured out her game to get the 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. [27] Magda Linette lost to Elsa Jacquemot 7-6(7), 1-6, 4-6.

[3] Alexander Zverev continues to struggle at the majors. He was bounced in the first round by Arthur Rinderknech 6-7(3), 7-6(10), 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-6. [7] Lorenzo Musetti could not figure out qualifier, Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Georgian won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Surprising given that Musetti knows how to play on grass, yet not surprising as Basilashvili is a talented veteran, who definitely has game. [18] Ugo Humbert lost to countryman Gael Monfils 4-6, 6-3, 6-6(5), 5-7, 2-6.
Embed from Getty Images[27] Denis Shapovalov continues to struggle to find his game. He lost to Mariano Navone,6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 4-6. American [30] Alex Michelsen ran into a tough opponent, Miomir Kecmanovic. The Serbian player has game and when he can be consistent, he is a dangerous opponent. He won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6). Opportunity missed for Michelsen. Another not surprised loss, [28] Alexander Bublik lost to Jaume Munar 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(5), 2-6. I will continue to maintain that the tiebreaker is a crucial set to win, for it often breaks the will of the player who lost it.
