[3] Coco Gauff is struggling mightily to fix her faulty serve. Listening to her post match interview, I saw the tension and frustration. In this state, what are the chances that she will get to the second week of the US Open? I find it telling that they waited so long to work on her serve, it has been a problem for a long time and that should have been their focus, but what do I know? I am just a tennis blogger. Sure, I have played and followed tennis for decades. Listen folks, this is my point of view, you can agree or disagree. If Ajla Tomljanovic had a better mental state, she could have pulled off the upset. Coco Gauff narrowly escaped. Perhaps that will inspire her to get it together. Thankfully, Gauff will face Donna Vekic, who is not at the top of her game. Yet, she will have to be mindful because if Vekic gets hot, she can be a dangerous opponent. Their H2H is 1:1. Will Vekic upset the apple cart?

[8] Amanda Anisimova had a fairly easy day at the office. Kimberly Birrell was able to break the American serve once, but it was not enough to upset Anisimova. The American won 6-3, 6-2. [14] Tommy Paul got by Elmer Moller 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Nice to see Paul getting though this match relatively easily. Is he fit enough to be a legitimate contender for the title? We know he has game, but what are his mental and emotional states these days?

Ashlyn Krueger got the upset against her fellow country woman, [26] Sofia Kenin. If you doubt the impact of injury on a player’s game, take a look at Kenin. Kenin is a former major champion and top ten player, who has been struggling to get back to that top form. She won the first set, but the confidence was not there to run with the momentum. Instead, Krueger elevated her game and won the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to win the match.
Hailey Baptiste Is Looking Good
So nice to see Hailey Baptiste stepping into her game. I saw her two years ago trying to get through the qualifying rounds of the US Open, now she is ranked forty-seven, a career high ranking. She lost that first round qualifying match to Diana Shnaider. Still only twenty-three years old, she continues to improve and will have to be more consistent if she wants to go even further up the rankings. Baptiste dispatched Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-3.

[20] Diana Shnaider has the game but has been so sporadic lately. Currently ranked seventeen, she could not get by the veteran Laura Siegemund. Shnaider lost 6-7(3), 6-2, 3-6. Follow us on X, Instagram, and Facebook (look for the green ball/tennis court icon).
