Valentin Vacherot Makes History In China

Valentin Vacherot

Valentin Vacherot did the impossible. The Monegasque player was ranked two hundred and four when he entered the Shanghai Rolex Masters1000 as a qualifier. This twenty-six-year-old player did so many firsts at this tournament. En route to the final, he defeated the “great” Novak Djokovic in two sets, claiming his first top five victory. When was the last time the Serbian lost to a player ranked outside the top two hundred? In 2021, Vacherot won his first two ITF tournaments.

Valentin Vacherot Had A History Making Run

Prior to this run, Vacherot had been languishing on the ITF and ATP Challenger Tours. He won his first ATP Tour main draw victory earlier this year. Valentin Vacherot defeated one top ten player, and a former top ten player to get to the final. Interestingly, he was almost knocked out of the tournament twice in the round of sixteen and the quarterfinals, but somehow managed to derail his opponents’ plans. He became the first native of Monaco to win a Masters1000 title and he did so in style.
