Iva Jovic Hopes Third Time Is The Charm Against Jasmine Paolini

Iva Jovic

Iva Jovic put on a command performance against the hometown favorite, Priscilla Hon. Unfortunately, Hon could not make any inroads against the pace and depth of shots from the American. [29] Iva Jovic won 6-1, 6-2. However, things do not get any easier for the American. Next up for Jovic is [7] Jasmine Paolini. Paolini leads their H2H 2:0.

Gauff Amongst The Other American Winners

[3] Coco Gauff made quick work of Olga Danilovic, 6-2, 6-2. [29] Frances Tiafoe started off well but fell asleep in the third set. Lucky for him, he was able to elevate his game in the fourth. I was initially surprised at how one-sided the match was, because Franscisco Comesana is a tricky opponent to play. Unfortunately, the effort to win the third set was his undoing and Tiafoe won 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

[19] Tommy Paul looked smooth and composed in his match against Thiago Agustin Tirante. Paul was never threatened and won 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Hailey Baptiste had an easy day at the office. She defeated Storm Hunter 6-2, 6-1. The American advances to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time. Last year Baptiste got to a career high of forty-seven. No doubt she is hoping to go far here and raise her ranking back into the top fifty. Sadly, for American fans, Baptiste will meet Gauff in the next round. Gauff won their only encounter in 2023 in straight sets.

[25] Learner Tien dropped the second set but righted his ship to win the next two sets, dropping only one game. Alexander Shevchenko was simply outplayed by the American. Tien won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 and faces a familiar foe in the next round.

Notable Americans Who Lost Their Way

Reilly Opelka fought hard to even the match at 2-2 sets each. Unfortunately, he faltered in the fifth set and lost to [14] Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Caty McNally looked good but could not sustain her momentum and lost in straight sets to [17] Victoria Mboko. Alycia Parks won the first set but forgot that she needs two sets to win the match. That lapse in concentration cost her the match, although she fought hard as the end approached. Sadly, it was not enough and [19] Karolina Muchova won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. That epic match in the first round took too much out of American Michael Zheng. Despite winning the first set, he retired in the fourth set to [32] Corentin Moutet. Moutet won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 2-0 RET.
