Unwelcomed rematch

Western & Southern Open, Cincinnati

Preview

Though they are best friends on tour, I doubt that Caroline and Serena enjoy hanging out this way.  Sure the competitor in each of them will probably deny that, but the obvious tension in their quarterfinal match at last week’s Rogers Cup, Canada was a testament of how undesirable they find it to play each other.

Alas, this rematch was inevitable, [CR12] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) saw to that when she took the victory in straight sets over [CR4] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL).  A. Radwanska appeared to be running on empty, understandably so, given her energy expenditure in winning last week’s Rogers Cup Tournament.  Though she raised her game in the second set and had chances to take it to a third, she could not capitalize on her break opportunities. So, instead of a consecutive Premier 5 semifinal berth, A. Radwanska went home with the loss 4-6, 6-7(5) .

I am looking forward to the rematch between the friends, I hope the competition is not hampered by undue tension and they are both able to play at their highest level.
