Hit or miss

Coco Vandeweghe 2014ASB Classic, Auckland

Power tennis is always exciting; however, it loses its appeal if there are more errors than winners.  That was the tale of today’s match.  There were more misses than winners coming off Coco Vandeweghe’s racquet. Vandeweghe will have to go back to the drawing board and work on her volleying skills.  Then after she improves that aspect of her game, she will have to learn how to adjust her strategy when plan “A” is not working.  That is what her opponent Barbora Zahlavova Strycova did so well in this match and her strategic changes flustered Vandeweghe.

Up a break in the second set and serving for the set, Vandeweghe’s game unraveled and she was unable to put it back together. She went down two consecutive breaks to lose the set and the match.  Her inability to stay focused and her lack of desire to fight for the match when she has so much talent is baffling.  There was absolutely no reason for Vandeweghe to lose this match.

SCORE: [CR26] Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) def. [CR38] Coco Vandeweghe (USA) 6-4, 7-5
