Roland Garros Loses More Seeds

ROLAND GARROS, Paris

Some seeds have no guarantee that they will make it to the second round, much less the second week of a Major because the depth of talent on both the ATP and WTA Tours can threaten any seed on any given day.  Some seeds were not so lucky today as they fell to their lesser ranked opponents.

[CR44] Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) defeated [CR6] Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) 6-4, 6-4.  Not a surprise given the results that Bouchard has been having of late.  Although she gave a valiant effort, it was not enough to overcome a determined Mladenovic.  Bouchard is the highest seed to fall.

[CR37] Jack Sock (USA) defeated [CR11] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) 7-6(6), 6-2, 6-3.  Dimitrov has been struggling to find consistency with his form and Sock made him pay for that today.  The first set was more mentally crucial for Dimitrov. Bouncing back after losing that set required more than Dimitrov was capable of giving today.  Sock continues to impress as he grows in confidence.  How far can he go in this tournament?

[CR106] Sesil Karatantcheva (BUL) defeated [CR25] Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 6-3, 6-4.  A lack of motivation has resulted in declining results from Jankovic.  Sadly, she was unable to elevate her game for the second major of the year and will have to wait until next year for another chance to win her first French Open title.  I wonder just how much more Jankovic has in the tank, she has been struggling to find motivation to keep playing and losing to a player ranked 106 certainly will not encourage her to keep trying.
