Day 1: Americans In Action

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMBLEDON

Day 1 action at Wimbledon gets underway today.  Several Americans will have to be on the alert from the first ball if they want to move into the second round.  A few will have to battle nerves as well as a tough opponent.  There will definitely be at least one American knocked out of the tournament in round one.  How many will advance at the conclusion of day one?

COURT 1——–Serena Williams def.  Margarita Gasparyan (RUS) 64, 61.

COURT 2——–Alison Riske lost to  Lucie Safarova (CZE) 63, 57, 36.  Riske lost despite serving for the match and having a break advantage in the third set.

COURT 3——–Madison Brengle lost to Venus Williams 06, 06.

COURT 7——-Edina Gallovits-Hall lost to Urszula Radwanska (POL) 26, 16.

Denis Kudla def. Pablo Cuevas (URU) 67(4), 46, 63, 62, 62.  Kudla came back from two sets down to upset the 28th seed.

COURT 9——–Bethanie Mattek-Sands def.  Alison Van Uytvanck (BEL) 63, 62.

Nicole Gibbs lost to Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) 36, 36.

COURT 12——John Isner def.  Go Soeda (JPN) 76(5), 64, 64.

COURT 14——Lauren Davis def. Polona Hercog (SLO) 64, 76(3)

COURT 15——Coco Vandeweghe def. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (SVK) 64, 62.

Steve Johnson def. Lukas Lacko (SVK) 63, 67(5), 46, 61, 64.

COURT 17——Irina Falconi lost to  Karolina Pliskova (CZE) 64, 46, 16.

Donald Young lost to an injured Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) 57, 62, 64, 64.

CENTRE COURT—-Sloane Stephens def. Barbora Strycova (CZE) 64, 62.

9 out of 16 American players advanced at the conclusion of day one.  Two seeded players were upset in the process by Sloane Stephens and Denis Kudla.
