Jitters and concentration lapses

06122015 Agnieszka RadAegon Open Nottingham

[CR13] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) vs. [CR63] Lauren Davis (USA)

Early match jitters saw both players lose their initial service game.  Radwanska quickly recovered and settled into the match while Davis struggled to get comfortable.  Davis never found her range and barely offered up much resistance today.  She had chances, she just failed to capitalize and Radwanska played with the most confidence I have seen in a long time. Davis is a very good player and her performance today was not an accurate reflection of her talent.  Yet, take nothing away from Radwanska who seemed to have found her stride on grass.  Radwanska won 6-2, 6-2 and faces Monica Niculescu in the semi-finals.

062015 RN2Mercedes Cup, Stuttgart

[CR10] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. [CR24] Bernard Tomic (AUS)

Nadal continues to fight his way through tough three setters. His continued inability to hold unto leads has got to be frustrating him. Today he had an early break in the second set but failed to consolidate that lead.  He had another lead in the tiebreaker, but lost that to lose the set.  He has complicated the picture by losing the second sets in both matches and being forced to go the distance to secure the victory. The physical toll of these extended matches is compounded by the emotional toll it takes to fight to regain the advantage and the victory.  Although he won 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3, he will want to avoid the lapses in concentration that seem to have crept into his game if he hopes to defeat Gael Monfils in the next round.
