Vandeweghe In and Johnson Out

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMBLEDON

072015 CVandeweghe[CR47] Coco Vandeweghe (USA) vs. [CR11] Karolina Pliskova (CZE)

Vandeweghe is a dangerous player and when she stays focused she can create problems for the top players. She has the serve and knows how to play on grass. Her only singles title came in 2014 on grass. Pliskova, the in-form player at the moment, perhaps underestimated the threat. Vandeweghe held her composure in the tiebreak to win the first set.  Lost focus early in the second, but quickly regrouped.  She broke back and won the match 76(5), 64. Can she build on this positive step?

072015 GD[CR52] Steve Johnson (USA) vs. [CR11] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)

Losing a hard fought set can motivate you to keep trying or completely drain your will. Johnson had his chances to win the first set. Once Dimitrov relaxed after winning the first set, there was no stopping him. Johnson on the other hand lost his intensity and lost the second set easily. The third set would demonstrate his willingness to fight back or his acceptance of defeat. He fought back and forced another tiebreak, but once again he came up short. Dimitrov won 76(8), 62, 76(2). He gets his nemesis [CR20] Richard Gasquet next.  Gasquet leads their head-to-head, 4:0.
