A Difficult Match For Both Sisters

US OPEN

[CR1] Serena Williams (USA) vs. [CR23] Venus Williams (USA)

This was perhaps their most difficult match and quite understandable considering what is at stake. Although both sisters still appeared somewhat uncomfortable, it was one of their better performances against each other.   I think they both wanted to win and played the best they could under the circumstances. It’s unfortunate that they had to play each other so early in the draw. Yet, they were aware that this could happen and appeared prepared to deal with the luck of the draw.  It took Venus a while to get going; however, once she found her rhythm, she gave Serena quite a scare. The second set was full of drama as Serena lost her focus, due in part to Serena succumbing to the emotional pressure of the occasion and Venus elevating her game.

No matter how hard they tried, there was still a certain lack of ferocity from both of them. How can they play each other with the same intensity that they would another opponent?  Subconsciously, there will always be a certain degree of restraint. Not surprising given the closeness of their bond. They were reticent about openly celebrating their winners; although Serena was much more demonstrative tonight than in any of their previous matches. This match mattered more to Serena and perhaps that explains why she got a little panicked in the second set and lost control of the set. However, once again, she was able to regain her composure and in the third set she was back to playing consistent, winning tennis. With the 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 defeat of her sister, Serena is another step closer to accomplishing the Calendar Grand Slam.  Can she overcome the last two obstacles?

  1. It was a little scary when Serena lost control of the 2nd set but I knew that she would pull it out in the end as she usually does. Yes, I believe that she can get past the next two obstacles and win the slam!!
