The good of day two, American number one, John Isner, won his match fairly comfortably. He defeated Malek Jaziri 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. He avoided any protracted sets, giving his knee some much needed rest.
[CR68] Donald Young pulled off a doubly spectacular feat today. He defeated Gilles Simon for the first time in six tries and he came back from a two set deficit for the first time in his career.
[CR46] Varvara Lepchenko defeated Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-1. A very nice win for her and hopefully she will build on this in the next round. Jack Sock defeated Victor Estrella Burgos 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. [CR117] Austin Krajicek defeated Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(6), 7-6(1). [CR117] Nicole Gibbs defeated Lourdes Dominguez 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The bad of today is that more seeds have fallen, two took me by surprise given their form and their tenacity. It makes me wonder if perhaps they did themselves in with too much tennis prior to the US Open. Lucie Safarova lost to Lesia Tsurenko 4-6, 1-6. This is the same opponent she just defeated last week Friday in New Haven, supporting my theory that she was defeated by a combination of Tsurenko and fatigue. Timea Bacsinszky lost to Barbora Strycova 5-7, 0-6. Despite having a losing record 0:2 to Strycova, I thought Bacsinszky would turn the tables this time around.
Several Americans lost their matches today; unfortunately, they came up against some tough opponents. Caroline Wozniacki defeated Jamie Loeb 6-2, 6-0. Tomas Berdych defeated Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Johanna Konta defeated Louisa Chirico 6-3, 6-0. This was a bit of a surprise, I thought Chirico would have given her more of a challenge and perhaps sneak out the victory. A question of nerves? Jurgen Melzer defeated Denis Kudla 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. Although Melzer is a crafty player, I expected Kudla to win this one. Nicolas Mahut defeated Sam Querrey 7-5, 7-6(60, 7-5. Viktor Troicki defeated Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Petra Cetkovska defeated Christina McHale 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Lukas Rosol defeated Jared Donaldson 7-6(7), 6-0, 7-6(4).
