Vandeweghe Upends Suarez Navarro

Miami Open

[CR6] Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) vs.  [CR38] Coco Vandeweghe (USA)

It was a comprehensive victory from start to finish for Vandeweghe.  She will always make errors because she plays big and always attacks the ball; however, today everything worked in her favor.  She served big and defended her serve very well, allowing only two break points against and saving both.  In two previous matches, Vandeweghe had never won a set from Suarez Navarro.  Today she moved much better against an opponent who is never easy to defeat.  Suarez Navarro could not handle Vandeweghe’s pace today and in the end, she lost easily 4-6, 2-6.

davidferrerFERRER MAKES SUCCESSFUL RETURN

[CR8] David Ferrer (ESP) vs. [CR81] Taylor Fritz (USA)

It was going to be a challenge for the young American, he knew it and so did his fans.  He got off to a tentative, nervous start; however, he gradually made the adjustment to the speedy game of Ferrer and broke back when Ferrer served for the set.  Fritz was right there with Ferrer, he just could not overcome the obstacles of both fatigue and Ferrer’s tenacity.  He had the first set on his racquet but the tension got to him.  The second set was a wash as the mental and physical toll of the first set was too much for the youngster.  Yet, he has nothing to be ashamed of; he pushed a top ten player very hard in the first set.  Ferrer made a successful return to the tour defeating one of the future stars of tennis, 7-6(6), 6-1.
