Americans On Day 1 At Roland Garros

ROLAND GARROS, FRANCE

Rain delayed the action on day one and then play was suspended due to darkness.  However, before the delay two Americans got ousted.

Alison Riske lost to [132] Viktorija Golubic (SUI) in three sets.  Riske seemed to have righted the ship when she won the second set 6-1 but she could not sustain the momentum.  Golubic won 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 and this makes the seventh straight first round loss at the Majors for Riske.

Donald Young lost to [80] Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) in straight sets.  His will was broken after he lost the first set in the tiebreak.  Gabashvili won 7-6(1), 6-2, 6-3.

SUSPENDED MATCHES

Jack Sock looked to be in control after winning the first two sets; however, clay is the great equalizer and [86] Robin Haase (NED) clawed his way back into the match.  Sock was not able to take advantage of break opportunities in the third set and there were no break points in the fourth.  Sock will have to come back tomorrow and try to regain his momentum.  There are no tiebreaks in the fifth set.                                   SCORE: 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-7(3), 0-0

They traded breaks in the first set until Nicole Gibbs got the upper hand and won the set.  The second set was all [54] Heather Watson (GBR).   She increased her winners to errors ratio and did not give Gibbs any break point opportunity. Gibbs took the early break in the third and hopefully she will hold on to the lead to victory. There is no tiebreak in the third set.                                                                                                                SCORE: 7-5, 2-6, 2-1(40-30).
