Gasquet still battling injury was the highest seed to fall today.  Olympic gold medalist, Puig, could not get out of the first round. Quite a few Americans had to battle against fellow Americans to get to the second round. Brengle also had to battle a right forearm injury and came out on the losing end, retiring to Kayla Day in the second set.  For the second consecutive first round of a Major, Sock gets the better of Fritz in five sets.

Serena Williams begins her quest for Major title number twenty-three tomorrow; however, her right shoulder injury may have something to say about that. Added to that, she has a very tough opponent in the first round and Williams has been prone to be vulnerable in the early rounds. Will her shoulder hold up?
