American Results And Seeded Upsets

AUSTRALIAN OPEN, Melbourne

DAY 4

[2] Serena Williams (USA) def. Lucie Safarova (CZE) 6-3, 6-4

Frances Tiafoe (USA) lost to [24] Alexander Zverev (GER) 2-6, 3-6, 4-6

Donald Young (USA) lost to [32] Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) 5-7, 3-6, 0-6

Ernesto Escobedo (USA) lost to [21] David Ferrer (ESP) 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 2-6

Jennifer Brady (USA) def. Heather Watson (GBR) 2-6, 7-6(3), 10-8

Nicole Gibbs (USA) def. Irina Falconi (USA) 6-4, 6-1

At the end of the day only 6 American women and 2 men remained.  Which of them has the greatest potential of making it to the final?  You can never discount Serena Williams; however, lately things have not gone her way at the Majors.  Although she passed the test against two potentially dangerous opponents in Belinda Bencic and Lucie Safarova, she can be vulnerable against opponents that on paper should not be a threat.

FALLEN SEEDS

[3] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) lost to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) 6-3, 6-2

[28] Alize Cornet (FRA) lost to Maria Sakkari (GRE) 5-7, 6-4, 1-6

[31] Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) lost to Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) 3-6, 1-6

[2] J. Murray/Soares lost to Querrey/Young (USA) 3-6, 6-7(5)

[10] Hradecka/Siniakova lost to Groenefeld/Peschke 6-7(9), 6-4, 1-6

[13] Pavic/Peya lost to J. Melzer/Qureshi 4-6, 6-2, 5-7

[14] Goerges/Ka. Pliskova lost to Klepac/Martinez-Sanchez 5-7, 6-4, 6-7(5)

[15] Cirstea/Witthoeft lost to Babos/Pavlyuchenkova 4-6, 2-6

SPECIAL MENTION: [9] Rafael Nadal (ESP) defeated Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.  This was the best I have seen Nadal serve and he will need that against his next opponent, Alexander Zverev.  He struggled to take advantage of break points and wobbled a little at the tail end of the match, signs that he is still not the confident Nadal of old.  Zverev had match point against him last year and has the game and the confidence to beat him.  Who will win this encounter?
