Nicolas Almagro’s Ranking Woes

WEEK: 05.01.2017

The mover of the week is Nicolas Almagro, he was once a top ten player (2011); however, injury has plagued his game in recent years.  He was a finalist in the Argentina Open last year, but did not play this year because of injury and the anticipation of the birth of his first child; thus, those ranking points fell off.   He won the Estoril Open title last year, but due to a slight change in the schedule, that tournament started a week later this season and those ranking points fell off as well and that has caused his ranking to drop significantly this week.  He is playing in Estoril this week in hopes of replicating last year’s result in an attempt to restore his ranking before the Roland Garros draw; however, it will not be an easy feat.  He will be immediately tested in the first round tomorrow when he plays the talented but often unpredictable, Benoit Paire.  If he gets by Paire there will be a few more obstacles in his path to the title.
