down under day two surprises

AUSTRALIAN OPEN, Melbourne

VICTORIOUS AMERICANS

[13] Sam Querrey def. Feliciano Lopez: 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

[17] Madison Keys def. Qiang Wang: 6-1, 7-5.

Tennys Sandgren def. Jeremy Chard: 6-4, 7-6(2), 6-2.

Bernarda Pera def. Anna Blinkova: 6-2, 6-2.

Denis Kudla stuns Steve Johnson with the 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory to advance to round two. Good win for Kudla; unfortunately it was at the cost of another American.

Lauren Davis def. Jana Cepelova: 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1. This was a great win for the American, who has been struggling since the latter part of 2017 to find her “A” form.

Tim Smyczek def. Alexei Popyrin: 6-3, 6-7(14), 6-3, 6-3.

SADLY, THERE WERE MORE AMERICAN LOSSES

Christina McHale lost to Aliaksandra Sasnovich: 3-6, 2-6.

Jared Donaldson lost to Albert Ramos-Vinolas: 2-6, 3-6, 4-6.

Donald Young lost to [14] Novak Djokovic: 1-6, 2-6, 4-6.

Madison Brengle lost to [9] Johanna Konta: 3-6, 1-6.

Shelby Rogers lost to [28] Mirjana Lucic-Baroni: 6-7(6), 7-5, 2-6.

Francis Tiafoe lost to [12] Juan Martin Del Potro: 3-6, 4-6, 3-6.

Varvara Lepchenko lost to [14] Anastasija Sevastova: 6-3, 3-6, 2-6.

Kristie Ahn lost to [20] Barbora Strycova: 1-6, 5-7.

MORE SEEDS FELL ON DAY TWO

[11] Kristina Mladenovic lost to Ana Bogdan: 3-6, 2-6.

[20] Roberto Bautista Agut lost to Fernando Verdasco: 1-6, 5-7, 5-7. While this was a surprise, it was not unexpected. Verdasco still has enough game to be a dangerous opponent and Bautista Agut must have been fatigued after giving so much to win the ASB Classic earlier this month.

[22] Milos Raonic lost to Lukas Lacko: 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-7(4).

[27] Petra Kvitova lost to Andrea Petkovic: 3-6, 6-4, 8-10.

[32] Mischa Zverev lost to Hyeon Chung: 2-6, 1-4 (RET).

SPECIAL MENTION: unexpected surprises

Eugenie Bouchard def. Oceane Dodin: 6-3, 7-6(5). Hopefully the Canadian can build on this victory.

Naomi Osaka def. Kristina Kucova: 6-5, 6-2

Guillermo Garcia Lopez def. Benoit Paire: 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4. Good win for the Spaniard who has been trying to rediscover his form following injury. Paire continues to baffle us, is he committed or not?
