Putintseva unable to defend ranking points

WEEK: 02.05.2018

Yulia Putintseva gets the mover of the week honors; unfortunately, it was not because of a positive change in her rankings. The Kazakhstanis was a finalist at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy last year and opted to play the Taiwan Open this year. It would have been irrelevant if she had made it to the final there; however, she lost in the quarterfinals and did not gain enough points to avoid the drop in her rankings. With the first round of the Federation Cup set to start this week, there are no are no ranking points available for any of the players on the WTA tour; thus, Putintseva will have to wait for the next WTA tournament to try to regain some points to improve her ranking.

PLAYERS (within the top 100) SPOTS MOVED NEW RANK
Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) DOWN  30 81
Kateryna Kozlova (UKR) UP  20 65              (CAREER HIGH)
Natalia Vikhlyantseva (RUS) DOWN  18 94
Timea Babos (HUN) UP  10 35
Madison Brengle (USA) UP  10 78

ATP Tour:  the top ten members remained exactly the same from the previous week. Roger Federer is less than two hundred points from regaining the number one spot.

WTA Tour: Kristina Mladenovic was replaced at #10 by Julia Goerges (this is a career high for the German). All other top ten members remained the same and in their exact positions from the previous.

Of note Serena Williams is no longer showing up as ranked in the top 100; she will probably be playing with a protected ranking in her first eight tournaments. Every Serena fan is anxiously awaiting her return, curious to see if she will be the exception to the rule and return from maternity leave in top form.
