MOVER OF THE WEEK: Marketa Vondrousova

Vondrousova

SIGNIFICANT RANKING CHANGES FOR THE WEEK OF 05.21.2018

Marketa Vondrousova gets the honors as mover of the week because she was unable to defend the title she won last year. She was seventeen when she won the inaugural Biel Bienne title and perhaps defending the title was too much pressure for her teenage shoulders to bear; yet, she should not be discouraged as more experienced players than her have failed repeatedly to defend their title(s) in the subsequent year. She made it to the round of sixteen in Stuttgart before retiring in the third set to lose to Elina Svitolina. Hopefully she will be fully recovered in time for the French Open which is now only six days away.

PLAYERS (within the top 100) SPOTS MOVED NEW RANK
Matthew Ebden (AUS) UP  12 73
Florian Mayer (GER) DOWN  11 90
Vasek Pospisil (CAN) DOWN  10 88
Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) DOWN  23 90
Viktoria Kuzmova (SVK) UP  22 84              (CAREER HIGH)
Vera Lapko (BLR) UP  16 77              (CAREER HIGH)
Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) DOWN  13 93
Qiang Wang (CHN) DOWN  13 91
Maria Sharapova (RUS) UP  11 29

ATP Tour:  there were no changes in the top ten members; however, there were a few changes. Marin Cilic and David Goffin both moved up one spot to #4 and #9 respectively. Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov and John Isner each moved down a spot to #2, #5 and #10 respectively. Rafael Nadal has regained the #1 ranking.

WTA Tour: there were also no changes in the top ten members; however, Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Pliskova traded places. Simona Halep remains atop the rankings.

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER: Alexander Zverev was unable to defend his Masters 1000 title in Rome; however, if it’s any consolation, he managed to win his first set on clay against Rafael Nadal. He was also leading in the third set before the rain delay destroyed his momentum and completely upset his plans of getting one of the biggest upsets of his young career.
