[7] Dominic Thiem (AUT) lost to [149] Alexei Popyrin (AUS). The nineteen year old Australian was up two sets when Thiem retired. Popyrin won 7-5, 6-4, 2-0 (RET).

[23] Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) lost to [59] Dayana Yastremska (UKR). The eighteen year old Ukrainian upset the veteran in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

[24] Hyeon Chung (KOR) lost to [53] Pierre-Hugues Herbert (FRA): 2-6, 6-1, 2-6, 4-6. The Frenchman is into the third round of the Australian Open for the second time.

AMERICANS WHO WERE CLOSE TO CREATING MAJOR UPSETS

[56] Sofia Kenin had a break in the third set and was serving 4-2 to take a 5-2 on [1] Simona Halep (ROU); unfortunately, the nerves kicked in and she did not win another game. Halep won 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4.

[89] Madison Brengle started off real hot but could not keep the momentum going against [7] Karolina Pliskova (CZE). The Czech won 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

upsetsAMERICAN MEN REMAINING IN THE DRAW AT THE END OF THE DAY

[81] Ryan Harrison (USA) lost to [15] Daniil Medvedev (RUS): 3-6, 3-6, 3-6. With his loss, there are now only two American men remaining in the singles draw: Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
