AUSTRALIAN OPEN: DAY ONE

The first day of the first major is in the books. While the loss of some seeds is always expected, the seeds that lost on day one may surprise you.

FALLEN MEN SEEDS

American [9] John Isner lost to his countryman [102] Reilly Opelka 6-7(4), 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-7(5). Perhaps he was feeling a tad drained like a few of the other players who exerted themselves in the week before the Open.

[13] Kyle Edmund lost to [57] Tomas Berdych: 3-6, 0-6, 5-7

[31] Steve Johnson (USA) lost to [37] Andreas Seppi: 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6

FALLEN WOMEN SEEDS

[14] Julia Goerges lost to [35] Danielle Collins (USA): 6-2, 6-7(5), 4-6 (first ever match won at a major for Collins).

[22] Jelena Ostapenko lost to [41] Maria Sakkari: 1-6, 6-3, 2-6

[32] Barbora Strycova lost to [44] Yulia Putintseva: 4-6, 6-7(1)

SURPRISE AMERICAN WINNERS

[39] Frances Tiafoe defeated (112) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND): 7-6(7), 6-3, 6-3

[50] Taylor Fritz defeated [93] Cameron Norrie (GBR): 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-2

[62] Denis Kudla defeated [170] Marc Polmans (AUS): 5-7, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2

[79] Mackenzie McDonald defeated [84] Andrey Rublev (RUS): 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

[87] Amanda Anisimova defeated [88] Monica Niculescu (ROU): 7-6(3), 6-4

[123] Sachia Vickery defeated [158] Ysaline Bonaventure (BEL): 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

AMERICANS WHO LOST ON DAY ONE

Michael Moh lost in four sets to Radu Albot.

Christopher Eubanks lost in four sets to [19] Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Taylor Townsend lost to fellow countrywoman [5] Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

Alison Riske lost in straight sets to [9] Kiki Bertens.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands lost in straight sets to Zoe Hives.

Bernarda Pera lost in three sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Tennys Sandgren lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in four sets. This was perhaps expected after he exerted himself over the weekend to win his first ATP World Tour singles title in Auckland. Unfortunately for the American, he was an Australian Open quarterfinalist last year and those ranking points will fall off when the new rankings come out after the tournament.
