Americans Doing Damage At Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, Great Britain

More Seeds Fell

[4] Kiki Bertens (NED) succumbed to the pressure of expectation and lost to [54] Barbora Strycova (CZE). Strycova is no stranger to grass, in fact, she had her best major showing at Wimbledon (2014 quarterfinalist). After a competitive first set, Strycova took control of the match in set two, winning 7-5, 6-1.

[9] Sloane Stephens (USA) lost again to [19] Johanna Konta (GBR). Despite struggling on serve for most of the second set, the Brit continued to fight and capitalized on her break point opportunities to win the second set and the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

[12] Fabio Fognini (ITA) lost in straight sets to [94] Tennys Sandgren (USA). It’s a much-needed victory for the American, whose ranking was on a downward trend. Sandgren won 6-3, 7-6(12), 6-3.

[13] Belinda Bencic (SUI) could not seal the deal after winning the first set. [55] Alison Riske (USA) showed her fighting spirit when she fought back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

[15] Qiang Wang (CHN) lost to the very tricky [21] Elise Mertens (BEL). Wang fought back in the second set, but just could not get by Mertens; she lost 2-6, 7-6(9), 4-6.

[18] Julia Goerges (GER) lost to [11] Serena Williams (USA) 3-6, 4-6. It was a better effort from Williams; however, she has got to increase the percentage on her break point conversion. I think she will since she knows if she wants the title, she must take her game up another notch.

[24] Diego Schwartzman (ARG) lost in a five-set thriller to [17] Matteo Berrettini (ITA). Schwartzman went up two sets to one but could not finish off the pesky Italian. Berrettini fought back to win 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

[27] Lucas Pouille (FRA) lost 5-7, 2-6, 6-7(4) to [2] Roger Federer (SUI).

[33] Jan-Lennard Struff (GER) lost 3-6, 6-7(5), 6-4, 5-7 to [58] Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ)

Americans Left In The Draw

[8] Kei Nishikori (JPN) knocked out Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

[30] Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) defeated [95] Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-3.

The American duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Danielle Collins upset [5] Samantha Stosur (AUS)/Shuai Zhang (CHN) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The American duo of Brady/Riske lost easily 2-6, 2-6 to the number one seeds, Timea Babos (HUN)/Kristina Mladenovic (FRA).
