Can Stephens Turn Her 2019 Season Around?

Sloane Stephens’ claim to fame is winning the 2017 US Open title and winning a title every year since 2015; however, that trend may be in serious jeopardy as Stephens has not had an impressive 2019 season to date.

In 2018, Stephens had the opportunity to cement herself in the history books of tennis; unfortunately, she failed to win the French Open or the WTA Finals titles after doing all the hard work to get to the finals. It is hard to read the American as she often gives off the impression that it is irrelevant whether she wins or loses. While that may not be the case, and more than likely it is not, her attitude seems to have had a negative impact on her performance this season and one she is having a hard time shaking.

Stephens’ Inconsistent Results

From April 2nd, 2018 to August 12th, 2019 the American was continuously ranked in the top ten; but it is hard to remain atop the rankings with inconsistent results. Of the twenty tournaments that she has played this season, Stephens has only gotten to two quarterfinals and one semifinal and some of her losses have been downright baffling. Of course, the question arises, “What is going on with the American?”

Stephens Loses In Beijing

As fans, we never fully know what is going on in a player’s life or mind and we can speculate as much as we want and never get close to the truth; yet, it is obvious that something is going on with Stephens. In 2018 Stephens defeated Saisai Zheng 6-1, 6-3 at the China Open and defeated her again earlier this year; however, another telling sign that things are not right in the Stephens’ camp, the American lost 6-3, 6-1 to Zheng at the China Open yesterday.

There are four WTA tournaments left in the season before the year-ending WTA Finals in Shenzhen; at this rate, it is not looking good for Stephens to get back to the WTA Finals and defend her finalist points if she does not win a title soon.
