AO Day One Is in The Books

Day one

The first day of any major tournament always brings with it some nerves. No one wants to lose in the first round and the seeded players especially do not want to be a victim of a first-round loss. Yet, despite their many years of playing in the majors, the seasoned veterans still cannot shake the first-round jitters. Who would stumble in the first round on day one?

Most of the top seasoned veterans came through with minimal bruising; however, not all veterans were that fortunate. Lots of matches were suspended because of torrential rain; thus, not all day one matches were completed.

Americans That Lost On Day One

The story of the day was Cori “Coco” Gauff. The fifteen-year-old American did it again. She defeated her idol, American Venus Williams, in straight sets in the first round of another major. Williams did not seem to be at her best physically; yet, she fought hard to keep it close in the first set despite being broken in her first service game on a slew of unforced errors.

Gauff served for the set at 5-4 up and got a little nervous, allowing Williams back in the set. It could have gone either way in the tie breaker, but Williams could not get a high volley and she dumped it into the net to give the first set to her younger countrywoman. The second set begun the exact same for Venus; however, this time there was no reprieve and Gauff sealed the deal, winning 7-6(5), 6-3.

[81] Christina McHale lost 3-6, 0-6 to [13] Petra Martic (CRO).

[84] Steve Johnson lost easily, 3-6, 2-6, 2-6, to [3] Roger Federer (SUI).

[127] Mackenzie McDonald has got to be so frustrated; he had a two-set-love lead on [30] Daniel Evans (GBR), all he had to do was win one more set. Unfortunately, he could not, and he lost 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 3-6.
