Collins was done in by the tenacity of her opponent and a poor second serve; she only won twenty-seven percent of her second serves in the third set and was unable to convert on her break point opportunities.

[16] Kenin/Mattek-Sands defeated Lee/Wu 6-4, 6-3.

[19] John Isner defeated [208] Alejandro Tabilo (CHI) 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

[29] Taylor Fritz had to do it the hard way. [122] Kevin Anderson (RSA) took the early lead two sets to love 6-4, 7-6(5); however, the American did not lose hope, he dug in his heels and fought back, taking the third set in a tiebreak 7-6(4). After that it was all Fritz as Anderson had nothing left in the tank to resist the charge of his younger opponent. Fritz won the last two sets 6-2, 6-2.

Sandgren/Withrow defeated Demoliner/Middelkoop 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(8).

Johnson/Querrey defeated Hsieh/Lu 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-4.

Gauff/McNally defeated Muchova/Teichmann 6-3, 6-2.

Krawczyk/Pegula defeated Begu/Pliskova 6-3, 6-2.

Americans Upset Down Under

[79] Taylor Townsend will have to wait to have her break out season at the next major. The twenty-three-year-old lost in straight sets to the wily veteran, [30] Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS). It was a battle, but in the end the Russian won 7-5, 7-6(1).

Rafael Nadal

Nadal Still On Course For 2nd AO Title

[1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) dispatched of [76] Federico Delbonis (ARG) in three sets. Things got a little complicated for the Spaniard in the second set when he failed to capitalize on nine break point opportunities; however, he regained his composure in the third, winning 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-1.

[19] Donna Vekic (CRO) followed up on her first-round victory by easily dispatching [61] Alize Cornet (FRA) 6-4, 6-2.

Eighteen-year-old [56] Iga Swiatek (POL) defeated [54] Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) 6-3, 7-5.

[75] Heather Watson (GBR) could not get by the sixteenth seed, Elise Mertens (BEL); she lost rather easily, 3-6, 0-6.
