Serena Williams Kicks Off Her 2021 Season With A Win

Serena Williams

Yarra Valley Classic, Melbourne

The 2021 tennis season is underway, has been since January 6th; however, this is Williams’ first appearance on the scene.  Let’s face it, I am a diehard fan of the Williams sisters.  Of course, I am elated to see them playing in 2021; yet, like many fans, we ask the questions: “Will this be the year that Serena wins number 24?” Of course, we also wonder, “Why is Venus still playing?”

Will Serena Ever Win Number 24?

I don’t know.  I think she had a whole bunch of chances to win number twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six and she faltered.  If you know anything about psychology, you know it gets harder and harder to believe that you can when you have squandered so many opportunities.  That being said, I believe that if Serena Williams is capable of playing from a state of love instead of a state of fear, she could win number twenty-four.

What’s Blocking Serena?

It is not a secret and there is no mystery.  The only thing and person blocking Serena Williams from what she desires on the tennis court is Serena’s fear.  It is her fear of losing and when she plays from that state, she will always lose.  What Serena needs to do is let go completely and believe.  For in anything in life if you do not believe, you will not achieve.  Therefore, in some dark corner of her mind lurks the fear that perhaps she no longer has what it takes.

Playing From A State of Abundance

Can Williams play from a state of believing she has enough talent still to win another major or two?  Can she let go of the fear of “what other people may be thinking”, or “the fear that she is not good enough anymore”?  Henry Ford said it best: “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right”.  Thus, Serena really needs to start believing for real that she still has game enough to claim major title number twenty-four.

Williams Defeats Gavrilova

The first set was a blowout, Williams was on her game and Daria Gavrilova was struggling to find her form.  Gavrilova, once ranked as high as number twenty is now languishing in the four hundreds [452], most likely due to injury and of course, the coronavirus pandemic has not helped in her comeback.  She was clearly struggling to find her form but was able to showcase some of her talents in the second set.  Williams won 6-1, 6-4.
