Seeds That Lost On Day One

The biggest upset of the day was two-time runner-up, [4] Dominic Thiem.  The Austrian lost after leading by two sets.  What went wrong for the Austrian?  Once again, we are reminded how tenuous confidence can be, even for the top ranked players.  This is a surface Thiem has done well on; he is considered the heir apparent to the current king.  Thus, this result will leave a lot of questions for Thiem and his team.

Thiem did something he had never done before, lose a match after winning the first two sets.  Stranger still, he had never lost to [68] Pablo Andujar.  The Spaniard came back to win 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

[16] Grigor Dimitrov was up 6-2, 6-4 and had to retire in the fourth set.  American [82] Marcos Giron got the victory due to retirement 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 3-0 RET.

[19] Hubert Hurkacz lost to [154] Botic Van De Zandschulp after leading two sets to love.  Van De Zandschulp won 6-7 {5), 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

[25] Daniel Evans lost to [48] Miomir Kecmanovic  6-1, 3-6, 3-6, 4-6.

[26] Angelique Kerber lost to the qualifier [139] Anhelina Kalinina 2-6, 4-6.

Special Mention: Alexander Zverev

The sixth seed had his hands full with his fellow countryman, [152] Oscar Otte.  Zverev fought back from a two-love deficit to claim the victory in five sets.
