Sam Querrey Was No Match For Alexander Zverev

Sam Querrey

US OPEN DAY 2

Perhaps it just wasn’t his day; whatever the cause, Sam Querrey offered up very little resistance against [4] Alexander Zverev. The American lost in straight sets.

Not So Good Day For These Americans

Catherine McNally was easily dispatched by [4] Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Another teenage American, Hailey Baptiste, lost in straight sets to Shuai Zhang. It was a quick visit from Coco Vandeweghe as she lost in straight sets to Martina Trevisan. The promising young Sebastian Korda retired in his match due to injury and after dropping the first set. This is a blow to American tennis. So many had high hopes for this young man, was he over-played leading up to the US Open?

Emilio Nava lost in four sets to Lorenzo Musetti. Katie Volynets lost to the big serving Australian, Ajla Tomljanovic, in straight sets. Ashlyn Krueger battled hard. Unfortunately, the American came out on the losing end against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Tommy Paul has lost his way. The American lost in four sets to Roberto Carballes Baena, not what I expected with his talent.

Americans On The Winning Side

[22] Reilly Opelka let his serving do the talking in his straight-set victory over Soonwoo Kwon. [61] Mackenzie McDonald defeated [27] David Goffin 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. [75] Amanda Anisimova got past the tricky veteran, Zarina Diyas, 7-5, 6-2. [43] Shelby Rogers upended fellow American, Madison Brengle, 6-4, 6-0. Nice to see Ernesto Escobedo back on the winning side of things. The American easily dispatched of the veteran player, Pablo Cuevas [6-1, 6-3, 6-1]. Denis Kudla made it to the second round  with a four set victory over Laslo Djere. Djere won the first set before Kudla came fighting back.

Seeds On The Losing Side Of Things

This was a shocker, [151] Maxime Cressy defeating former US Open semifinalist, [9] Pablo Carreno Busta, in five sets. Shocking because the American had to fight back from two sets down. [20] Lorenzo Sonego lost to the journeyman, Oscar Otte. Otte pushed three of the four sets to tiebreakers. This was also a surprise, [25] Karen Khachanov lost in five sets to Lloyd Harris. This after going up two sets to one.
