Serena Williams was not serene in her match against Danka Kovinic. Williams battled for every point. It was a total body fight for the twenty-three-time major champion. She started off with the early break, but Kovinic fought back. However, in the end Williams got the 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Plenty Seeds Fell On Day One

Fourth seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was the highest seed to fall on day one. I have no idea what was going on with Tsitsipas, he lost the first set 0-6, and was about to lose the second the same way. Daniel Elahi Galan came out en fuego. It was a first encounter that Tsitsipas will never forget. Galan won 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

Seventh seed, Simona Halep, fell to relatively unknown Daria Snigur. Snigur kept the ball in play, barely, and allowed Halep to unravel. The Ukrainian won 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

Tenth seed, Daria Kasatkina, lost 6-7(8), 6-1, 3-6 to Harriet Dart. [24] Francisco Cerundolo lost to Andy Murray 5-7, 3-6, 3-6. [27] Martina Trevisan lost to Evgeniya Rodina, 5-7, 1-6. [30] Jil Teichmann lost to the resurgent Shuai Zhang, 4-6, 2-6. [30] Maxime Cressy lost due to injury, he retired 7-6(4), 5-7, 1-5.

[31] Nikoloz Basilashvili lost to the qualifier, Yibing Wu, 3-6, 4-6, 0-6.

American Success Stories On Day One

[12] Coco Gauff made quick work of Leolia Jeanjean; she won 6-2, 6-3. [20] Madison Keys started off slowly; however, she found her form in time to dispatch of Dayana Yastremska 7-6(3), 6-3. [29] Alison Riske dispatched of fellow-countrywoman, Eleana Yu, 6-2, 6-4. [29] Tommy Paul narrowly escaped the upset bug. He defeated Bernabe Zapata Miralles 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.

[31] Shelby Rogers defeated Arantxa Rus, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Elizabeth Mandlik defeated Tamara Zidansek 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4. J.J. Wolf got a nice victory over [16] Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Sebastian Korda defeated Facundo Bagnis 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-1. Emilio Nava took full advantage of his wild-card entry. The twenty year old defeated John Millman 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1.
